Introducing rural lifestyle and medicine to medical students.

The John Flynn Placement Program provides 300 undergraduate medical students the opportunity to experience clinical practice and lifestyle in rural and remote locations across Australia.

The John Flynn Placement Program (JFPP) is an initiative of the Australian Government Department of Health and is designed to attract the future medical workforce into a remote and rural career through lifestyle and work experience in rural locations.

Successful JFPP scholars spend eight weeks over three to four years in a remote or rural community with a one-to-one professional mentor, community host and contact.

Community contacts, hosts and mentors

JFPP scholars are paired with a mentor from the community to expand their clinical knowledge. Doctors who choose to become a mentor will have the opportunity to pass on skills and life lessons to medical students, and discuss the benefits of practising in a rural location.

It is equally important for JFPP scholars to engage in a rural community and fully experience life in a rural location. Scholars are placed with a host and reside at the host’s home for the duration of their placement. Both a host and community contact (not required to be a health professional) are the key link between the scholar and the community – making introductions to other residents, organising social activities and providing opportunities to experience the rural culture.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, community contact or host for a JFPP scholar, please contact the Future Workforce Project Officer or visit the JFPP website.
