Well supported country doctors delivering quality medical care
The Better Medical Care Initiative for Country WA is a coordinated, targeted response to address the challenges faced by rural doctors across the State. It is a partnership between the WA Country Health Service and Rural Health West to ensure doctors can access relevant ongoing medical training, timely locum support, and professional mentoring, and that their families are well supported to live and work across rural Western Australia.
Education and Training
The Better Medical Care Initiative will deliver more than 20 continuing professional development opportunities to rural doctors to extend and enhance their medical skills and knowledge.
Face to face training will be delivered at 13 locations across Western Australia each year to make essential training more accessible to rural and remote medical practitioners. Locations will be rotated each year to ensure all doctors have opportunity to attend. These workshops focus on enhancing the skills of rural medical practitioners to manage emergency medical situations such as paediatric, obstetric, toxicological, neonatal and neurological emergencies.
A three-day rural emergency weekend will also be held for doctors to extend their emergency response skills in-situ in iconic and remote locations. An annual Rural GP Anaesthetics Forum will also be held to provide opportunity for GP anaesthetists to refresh and update their clinical skills and knowledge.
“It’s imperative to have specific professional development for GP anaesthetics for skills, confidence and networking. It’s very useful to talk through different scenarios and to get insight from consultant anaesthetists.”
